Why Cockroaches are Considered a Pest

Cockroaches are a pest

Perhaps one of the most hated pests worldwide would be the humble cockroach in all their many species (and believe us, there are many!) Cockroaches are a real pest for many homes and commercial sites as they are capable of gaining entry through minuscule gaps and are happier than a pig in mud when left to live in drains, sewers or under dishwashers (or should we say happier than a roach in grime!).

Cockroaches will eat just about anything and can be found just about anywhere. We've resolved cockroach infestations in hair salons, restaurants, shopping centers, medical facilities, cars, camper vans and of course homes across Brisbane. The reason cockroaches are such pests in both domestic and commercial situations is their ability to breed very quickly and live on whatever is available from hair, coffee grounds, dog food, compost, toast crumbs and even each other.

Signs of a roach problem

Cockroaches leave behind small black droppings that almost looks like dirt (below). Cockroaches

Signs of Roach Problems

also shed their skin so if you see start to see cockroach shells in the back of cupboards it could be a sign you have a cockroach problem. If you are also spotting cockroach eggs (known as ootheca) this is a big red flag. Ootheca are deep reddish brown egg cases that females leave behind (most pest species) that hatch with multiple nymph cockroaches.

Cockroaches also have a distinctive odour that pest controllers know all too well but generally you can only smell a cockroach infestation when it is quite large. You're likely to see cockroaches before you smell them and once you start to see them then that is a sure sign that there is something going on.

If you spot any of these signs, be sure to act quickly because, like any pest problem, cockroaches can get out of hand very quickly and depending on the species, can become very difficult to eradicate if they are left untreated for long periods of time.

Of course there are simple things you can do to help prevent cockroaches kicking back and declaring themselves your room mate. As well as annual preventative pest treatments, cleaning and general maintenance is an essential part of the pest control process. Cockroaches won't come into contact with the pest control if they never have to leave your pantry because there is a feast of unsealed food available for them!

We know how simplistic it sounds but honestly it works! Making sure there is limited food for cockroaches to eat means you can reduce the likelihood and severity of a cockroach problem and keeping up with annual pest control treatments is a surefire way to stop any cockroach infestation before it starts.
