How to Make Your Home Less Attractive to Termites

Reducing the risk of a termite attack

Reduce Moisture

Termites love moisture

Termites love moisture so you should eliminate or reduce moisture where possible around your home. Make sure gutters and down pipes are clear and in good repair to prevent water pooling. Make sure you repair any drainage or plumbing problems promptly to avoid excess moisture around your home and be sure to ventilate damp sub floors or other areas to reduce moisture and make your home less attractive to termites

Don't feed the termites!

timber in direct contact with soil is a termite risk

Be sure to remove all excess timber from around your gardens or from your sub floor. Like all pests, subterranean termites will go where the food is plenty so reducing timbers in direct contact with soil will go a long way to reducing your home's termite risk. Also, take the time to cut back shrubs and bushes so they are not in contact with the home and avoid planting trees and gardens too close. Keep the slab edge clear of gardens and debris as this is a common access point for termites and keeping this area clear will help you and your termite inspector identify if there is termites gaining access to your home.

Maintain any home repairs

Don't let leaks or a crack in the brickwork or foundation slab get out of hand. Making repairs as needed is really the best way to stay on top of things so problems don't spiral out of control. You can be sure that pipe that sprang a leak is only going to get worse the longer it goes un-fixed. Termites love it when a leak goes un-repaired or when there is a crack in the slab or footings as it's like an all access pass for the attacking colony.

Don't take any chances
