Do you have German Cockroaches?

German Cockroach Pest Control

Do you turn on your kitchen light at night to see cockroaches scurrying across the kitchen bench and underneath the dishwasher? Did they look a little different to the big, brown, flying cockroaches you’re used to seeing? If you’re finding a lot of cockroaches (far more than your average invader that finds its way inside at night time) then it’s time to consult a professional pest controller. If left unchecked any cockroach infestation can get out of hand very quickly, especially if there is plenty of food for them to eat and places for them to hide. The most troublesome of the cockroach world is the German cockroach as it breeds very quickly and thrives in moist environments like around your dishwasher, fridge, under the sink and in drains.

German Cockroach Identification

The German cockroach is easy to spot (if you can catch one) by the notable markings on their body. German cockroaches are brown and tan in colour with two dark brown strips that run down the outside edge of the pronotum (head area). They are smaller than other cockroach species, typically averaging from 13-16mm in length at adulthood. German cockroaches are considered a domestic and commercial pest worldwide. They infest dark, humid and warm environments and due to their short life cycle and their ability to reproduce continually, their numbers can spike and get out of hand very quickly. Like other cockroach species, German cockroaches are very capable of contaminating food and food preparation surfaces with pathogens such as Salmonella and E.Coli. Because German cockroaches prefer areas like drains, sewers and dishwashers they are very likely to pick up these pathogens and transport them right to your kitchen bench.

Summary

  • Light brown colour

  • They are smaller than other cockroach species (average 13-16mm)

  • Prolific breeders

  • Infest dark, humid and warm environments

Getting Rid of German Cockroaches

If your pest controller finds German cockroaches during your pest control service there’s a very good chance they will recommend a follow up or second stage treatment in four-six weeks time. This is so we can gain full control of the cockroach numbers and leave you with a cockroach free home. The technician may make other recommendations to help get control of the cockroach populations from cleaning certain areas, removing or sealing food stuffs or other general household cleaning solutions. German cockroaches thrive in messy houses so it’s important to stay on top of the housework and clean up messes and spills as they happen.
